Does your industry change your SEO strategy?

The mechanics of search are the same everywhere. What changes by sector is how people search, what convinces them, and what you are allowed to say.

Every agency claims sector expertise, and most of it is thin. This guide separates the parts of SEO that are genuinely universal from the parts that change by industry, so you can tell which kind of specialism you are being sold.
What is the same in every sector
Crawling, indexing, page speed, site structure, title tags, internal linking and how links pass authority do not vary by industry. A technical problem on a dental site is the same technical problem on a scaffolding site. This is most of the work in the first three months of any campaign, and it is covered in technical SEO explained and on page SEO basics.
What genuinely differs
- Search intent and urgency. A locked out customer and a homeowner planning an extension behave nothing alike. One needs a phone number in three seconds, the other needs a photo gallery and a cost guide.
- The buying cycle. Some sectors convert in minutes, others take months of research. That changes how much informational content is worth building.
- Trust signals. Registration numbers, accreditations, inspection ratings and insurance backing carry enormous weight in some sectors and none in others.
- Regulation. Health, legal and financial content sits under stricter quality expectations, and some sectors have advertising rules that limit what can be claimed at all.
- Where the demand sits. Some markets live in the map pack, others in ordinary results, others in directories and marketplaces you do not control.
How local a sector is
The single biggest structural difference is how much of the demand is local. A trade business competes inside a few miles, which makes the local SEO guide the most important thing it will ever read. A software company or a manufacturer competes nationally, where local signals barely matter and content depth decides everything.
That difference should change the quote you receive. If a national campaign and a two suburb local campaign are priced identically, somebody is not thinking. Our SEO pricing guide covers the ranges.
Spotting genuine sector knowledge
A template, by contrast, produces a page per sector with the same structure and the industry name swapped in. The tell is generic content ideas and no mention of anything a practitioner in your sector would consider obvious. Put the questions in questions to ask an SEO agency to them and see what comes back.
Is sector experience worth paying more for?
Sometimes. It is worth a premium in regulated and technical sectors, where mistakes are expensive and the learning curve is long. It is worth little in straightforward local service markets, where a strong generalist who asks good questions will match a specialist within a month.
One caution: an agency working with three of your direct competitors is not neutral. Ask about conflicts before you share anything commercially sensitive. How to choose an SEO agency covers the rest of the selection process.

Frequently asked questions
Should I only consider agencies with experience in my sector?
No. Treat it as one factor among several. It matters most in regulated sectors and least in straightforward local service markets, and a curious generalist frequently outperforms a specialist running the same playbook for the tenth time.
Will an agency working with my competitor help or hurt me?
It cuts both ways. They know the market well and they may be constrained in what they can do for you. Ask directly how they handle conflicts, and be cautious about sharing margin or pipeline data.
Do industry specific tactics actually exist?
A few. Review generation in healthcare, project photography in home improvement, seasonal content in events and stock accuracy in retail are all genuinely sector shaped. The underlying discipline is the same everywhere.
Why do you not publish a guide for every industry?
We publish one only where enough Bristol agencies serve that sector for a comparison to be honest. Publishing a page with nothing behind it would be exactly the thin content we tell people to avoid.
