AI search and SEO: what actually changes

Published 26 August 2026 · Updated 26 August 2026 · 9 min read

AI has changed how answers are presented, not how they are found. The pages that get cited are, overwhelmingly, the pages that already ranked.

Read with AI

Search results now frequently open with a generated summary rather than a list of links, and a meaningful share of questions are asked in an assistant instead of a search box at all. That is a genuine change, and it has produced an enormous amount of nonsense about SEO being dead. This guide separates what has actually changed from what has not.

How AI answers are actually built

Whether it is an AI Overview in Google, an answer in ChatGPT or a response in Perplexity, the underlying process is broadly the same. The system runs one or more searches, retrieves a set of pages, and writes a summary from what it finds, citing some of the sources.

That last part is the point most commentary misses. These systems are readers, not oracles. They are reading the same web you are competing in, and they mostly read pages that already rank well. Getting a page into that retrieved set is the same job as ordinary SEO: be relevant, be trusted, be findable.

What genuinely changes

  1. Informational clicks fall. If somebody wants a definition or a quick fact, the answer now appears without a visit. That traffic was rarely commercially valuable, but it did feed the top of funnels.
  2. Citation becomes a goal in itself. Being named as the source builds awareness even without a click, and often produces a branded search later. See why brand mentions now matter.
  3. Question shaped content gets more valuable, not less. Clear answers to specific questions are what these systems extract. See question led content and AI answers.
  4. Measurement gets harder. Assistant referrals are poorly attributed and often invisible. See measuring AI search traffic.
  5. Thin content collapses faster. A page that summarised what everybody else said has no reason to exist now that a machine does that instantly.

What does not change

  • Commercial and local searches still send clicks. Somebody choosing a plumber wants to see the plumbers.
  • Technical foundations still decide whether you are in the retrieved set at all. See technical SEO explained.
  • Links and reputation still signal which sources are worth trusting.
  • Your Google Business Profile still drives local enquiries, arguably more than before. See the local SEO guide.
  • The commercial calculation is unchanged: enquiries, not impressions. See measuring SEO ROI.

Why local businesses are least affected

If you are a trade, a clinic, a restaurant or a professional practice serving a place, the change is smaller than the headlines suggest. Somebody who needs a plumber in Bristol or a solicitor in Bristol is not satisfied by a paragraph of prose. They want a business, a phone number and reviews, which is exactly what the map pack provides. AI and local search covers this in detail.

What to actually do about it

Note what is not on that list: nothing exotic, and nothing requiring a new retainer line item. If an agency is quoting a premium for "AI optimisation", read generative engine optimisation before agreeing to it, and check the pitch against SEO agency red flags.

If you want help, compare SEO agencies in Bristol and ask each how their approach has changed in the last two years. The honest answers are more interesting than the confident ones. You can also request quotes and put the question to three at once.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. The work that makes a page rank is the same work that makes it eligible to be cited in an AI answer. What has died is content written purely to occupy space, which was always a poor investment.

Should I pay extra for AI optimisation?

Almost never as a separate line. The practices that help are ordinary good SEO: clear structure, direct answers, verifiable facts, structured data and genuine authority. Be suspicious of anything priced as a new discipline.

Has my traffic already dropped because of AI Overviews?

Possibly, if a lot of your traffic came from informational queries. Check Search Console for a drop in clicks against steady impressions on question style searches, which is the usual signature.

Which businesses are most exposed?

Publishers, comparison sites and anyone whose traffic depends on answering general questions. Local service businesses and ecommerce with real products are far less exposed.
