Choosing an agency
How to choose an SEO agency

Most bad SEO experiences start at the shortlist stage, not the delivery stage. Get the selection right and the rest becomes far easier to manage.

SEO is unusually hard to buy. The work is technical, the results are slow, and the industry contains genuinely excellent practitioners alongside people selling automated reports. This guide is the process we would use ourselves, in order, from working out what you actually need to signing something you can get out of.
Step one: define the outcome, not the tactic
Do not start by deciding you need link building or a technical audit. Start with the commercial sentence: "we need twelve more enquiries a month from people searching for what we do, and each one is worth about £400 to us". Everything else follows from that, including how much you should spend, which our guide to SEO pricing covers in detail.
If you cannot yet write that sentence, work out the three numbers in measuring SEO ROI first. It takes an afternoon and it changes every conversation you have afterwards.
Step two: decide what kind of help you need
- A local business chasing the map pack needs local SEO Bristol rather than a full service retainer.
- A site that used to rank and no longer does needs diagnosis first. Buy an SEO audit in Bristol before you buy anything ongoing.
- A site being rebuilt or replatformed needs site migration SEO Bristol involved before launch, not after.
- A team that can execute but lacks direction needs SEO consultancy Bristol by the hour.
- A slow, fragile or badly structured website needs technical SEO Bristol before content will earn anything.
Step three: build a shortlist of three
Three is the right number. Two gives you no comparison, and beyond four the process stalls and everyone loses interest, including the agencies. Look for relevance over size: an agency that has worked in your sector will spend less of your money learning it. You can compare SEO agencies in Bristol by rating and specialism, or narrow straight to your sector, for example SEO for solicitors in Bristol, SEO for accountants in Bristol or SEO for plumbers in Bristol.
Proximity matters less than it used to, but it is not nothing. Being able to sit in a room occasionally improves briefing quality, and an agency that knows the local market brings context a national firm will not have. Browse SEO agencies by Bristol area if that matters to you.
Step four: the first conversation
The single most useful signal in a first call is whether the agency diagnoses before it prescribes. A team that has looked at your site and can name two specific problems is worth more than one with a polished deck and a case study reel. Take the full list from questions to ask an SEO agency into the call, and know the red flags that should end a conversation before you go in.
Step five: check the proof
Case studies are marketing documents. Verify them: ask for the client name, look at whether the site still ranks today, and ask what the agency would do differently now. Ask to speak to a current client, not a hand picked reference from three years ago. Reviews help, but check whether they mention results or only mention being pleasant to deal with.
Step six: read the contract properly
- Notice period. Three months initial then 30 days rolling is fair. Twelve months with no break is not.
- Ownership. Content, tracking, documentation and any accounts created for you should be yours on exit.
- Deliverables. Named activities, even if the mix flexes month to month. "Ongoing optimisation" is not a deliverable.
- Reporting. Frequency, format, and whether you get direct access to your own analytics and Search Console.
- Subcontracting. Whether any of the work is outsourced. See white label SEO.
Step seven: set up the first ninety days
Agree what month one, two and three look like before work starts, so you have something to measure against that is not a ranking graph. Your first 90 days with an SEO agency sets out what should actually happen, and SEO reports explained covers what you should be receiving by the end of it.
When you are ready, request quotes from Bristol SEO agencies and run every response through the checklist above.

Frequently asked questions
How many agencies should I approach?
Three. Enough to compare approach and price, few enough that you can give each one a proper conversation and make a decision inside a fortnight.
Does the agency need experience in my industry?
It helps and it is not essential. Sector experience shortens the learning curve and usually means better keyword judgement. A strong generalist who asks good questions often beats a sector specialist coasting on a template.
Should I choose a local agency?
For a local business, there is a real advantage in an agency that knows the market and can meet you occasionally. For a national or ecommerce campaign, capability matters far more than postcode.
What if I already have an agency and I am unsure about them?
Run an independent audit before making a decision. It gives you an objective view of the site and tells you whether the problem is the agency, the budget or the brief.
