Why cheap SEO usually costs more
Published 14 August 2026 · Updated 26 August 2026 · 6 min read
A £200 a month SEO package is not a smaller version of a £2,000 one. It is usually a different product entirely, and often one that costs money to undo.

Start with the arithmetic. If an agency charges £200 a month and needs to cover salaries, tools, overheads and profit, your account is worth perhaps two hours of junior time. Two hours a month cannot research a market, write a page, fix a technical problem and report on it. Something has to give, and what gives is almost always quality.
What low cost packages usually contain
- An automated audit report. Generated by a tool in seconds, sent monthly, rarely acted on.
- Directory submissions. Bulk listings on low quality directories that no customer visits and Google has discounted for years.
- Templated or spun content. Pages assembled from a template with the town name swapped, which Google is unusually good at spotting.
- Bought links. Cheap placements on sites that exist only to sell links. This is the item that can actively harm you.
- Rank tracking for easy terms. Reporting on phrases nobody searches, so the graph goes up while the phone does not ring.
None of that is illegal and some of it is harmless. The problem is that it consumes a year of budget and a year of time, which for a small business is the more expensive loss. How long SEO takes to work explains why a wasted year matters so much.
The cost of undoing it
Two problems outlast the contract. Thin, duplicated pages dilute a site and have to be removed or rewritten, and a spammy link profile may need disavowing and monitoring. Neither is dramatic to fix, but both are billable, and you are paying a second agency to remove what you paid the first one to add. Recovery work of this kind is a service category in its own right, which tells you how common the problem is. If you are in that position, start with an SEO audit in Bristol rather than another retainer.
Better uses of a small budget
If your budget is genuinely under £500 a month, the honest advice is not to spread it thinly across everything. Pick one of these instead.
- Buy a one off audit and act on it yourself. £600 spent once, with a clear list of fixes, beats £200 a month spent on nothing. Start with what an SEO audit should include.
- Fix your Google Business Profile. For a local business this is free and often the single highest return hour you will spend. See the local SEO guide.
- Buy a few hours of consultancy a quarter. Senior direction plus your own execution is the best value structure at a low budget.
- Write the pages yourself. Nobody knows your customers better. On page SEO basics covers enough to get the structure right.
Spotting a cheap package dressed up as a full service
Vague answers to any of those are your answer. There is a longer list in questions to ask an SEO agency, and if you would rather see real quotes than theory, you can compare quotes from Bristol SEO agencies and judge the responses against this article.

Frequently asked questions
Is any SEO under £500 a month worth doing?
Yes, if it is narrow and honest. A local campaign focused purely on the map pack and a handful of service pages can work at that level. What does not work is a full service promise at a part time price.
Are bought links always harmful?
Not always immediately, but they are always a risk you are carrying rather than an asset you own. Google treats paid links that pass ranking signals as a violation, and the sites that sell them cheaply are the easiest ones to identify at scale.
I have already spent a year on a cheap package. What now?
Get an independent audit before signing with anyone new. You need to know what was published, what links were built and what tracking exists. That audit also gives your next agency a proper starting point rather than a guess.
Do freelancers count as cheap SEO?
No. A good freelancer at £50 an hour is expert time, just less of it. The problem with cheap packages is not the price point, it is that the work behind it is automated rather than considered.
