Reviews and SEO

Reviews are the one ranking factor your customers control. The businesses that win at local search are usually the ones that ask, consistently.
Read with AI
Reviews do two jobs. They feed the prominence signal that helps decide map pack position, and they decide whether somebody picks you out of the three businesses shown. The second job is worth more than most owners assume.
What actually counts
- Volume relative to competitors, not in absolute terms. Forty reviews is a lot in some sectors and nothing in others.
- Recency. A hundred reviews, none in the last year, reads as a business that has stopped caring.
- Rating, though a perfect five out of five with high volume is often trusted less than a 4.7.
- Content. Reviews mentioning the service by name and the area help relevance in ways a bare star rating does not.
- Replies. Public, prompt and unemotional. Read far more carefully than owners expect.
A repeatable way to ask
- Pick the moment. Immediately after the job is finished, the problem is solved or the order arrives. Not a month later.
- Make it one tap. Use the short review link from your Google Business Profile in a text message. Every extra step halves the response rate.
- Ask personally. A message from the person who did the work outperforms an automated email substantially.
- Ask everybody, not just the delighted. Filtering is a guideline breach and it produces a suspiciously perfect profile.
- Make it somebody’s job. Consistency is the entire game, and it is the thing that quietly stops after three weeks.
What the rules forbid
Handling a bad review
Reply within a couple of days, acknowledge the specific problem, avoid arguing the facts in public, and move the detail to a phone call. Prospective customers are not looking for a perfect record, they are looking for evidence of how you behave when something goes wrong.
Genuinely fake or abusive reviews can be reported, though removal is inconsistent. It is rarely worth more energy than a good reply.
Beyond Google
Google reviews matter most for local search, but sector platforms carry weight with buyers and sometimes appear in results themselves: Checkatrade for trades, TripAdvisor for hospitality, sector specific registers for regulated professions. Spreading effort too thinly is a mistake. Choose Google plus the one platform your customers actually check.
Review growth sits inside most local SEO Bristol engagements, and it is one of the few areas where a business owner asking properly beats an agency automating it. If you want help building the process, compare quotes from Bristol SEO agencies and ask each how they handle review generation.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
How many reviews do I need?
More than the businesses currently ranking above you, and enough recent ones to look active. Search your main term, look at the three in the map pack, and use those as your benchmark.
Can I remove a bad review?
Only if it breaches the platform’s policies, for example if it is abusive, off topic or clearly from someone who was never a customer. Genuine criticism, however unfair it feels, will stay.
Do reviews on my own website help SEO?
They help conversion, and with review structured data they can affect how your result appears. They do not carry the same weight as reviews on a platform you do not control, for the obvious reason.
Is it worth replying to positive reviews?
Yes, briefly. It signals an active business, it occasionally adds relevant words to your listing, and it costs a minute.
