Link building explained

A link is another site vouching for yours. That is why it works, and it is also why buying them in bulk does not.

Links remain one of the strongest signals in search, for the simple reason that they are hard to fake at scale without leaving traces. This guide covers what to aim for and what to refuse.
What makes a link valuable
- Relevance. A link from a Bristol business publication is worth more to a Bristol firm than one from a general high traffic site with no connection to you.
- Editorial placement. A link inside an article somebody chose to write, not in a footer or a paid listing.
- Trust of the linking site. Established sites with real audiences, not sites that exist to publish links.
- Anchor text. The words in the link, which should read naturally and vary rather than repeating an exact phrase every time.
- Whether the page it points at deserves it. Links to a thin page are wasted.
Links worth avoiding
- Bulk directory submissions. Hundreds of listings on directories nobody visits. Discounted for over a decade.
- Private blog networks. Sites built solely to sell links. When one is identified, everything linked from it is affected.
- Paid guest posts on link farms. The tell is a site publishing about every subject in the world, badly.
- Reciprocal link schemes. "Link to us and we will link to you", at scale.
- Comment and forum spam. Worthless, and visible to anyone who looks.
If an agency sells links by the dozen, that is a genuine red flag, and one of the most common items to be quietly outsourced, as white label SEO explains.
Tactics that genuinely work
- Digital PR. Original data, research or comment that journalists want to cover. The most durable approach and the reason digital PR Bristol commands higher fees than link building.
- Being genuinely useful. Tools, calculators and reference guides earn links passively for years.
- Local sponsorship and community involvement. Clubs, charities and events, where the link is a by product of something real.
- Trade bodies and supplier listings. Membership and partner pages you are entitled to be on.
- Reclaiming unlinked mentions. Somebody already wrote about you without linking. Asking works surprisingly often.
Local citations, which are different
For a local business, consistent name, address and phone listings across the major UK directories still matter, not because of the link value but because they corroborate that you exist where you say you do. This is a one off tidy up rather than an ongoing spend, and it is covered in the local SEO guide.
Checking what your agency has built
Open five of them. If they are articles you would be pleased to be mentioned in, the work is real. If they are unreadable pages about unrelated subjects, you are accumulating risk. Link building Bristol lists agencies with the specialism, and these questions cover what to ask before you commit.

Frequently asked questions
How many links do I need?
There is no target number. What matters is whether you have more relevant, credible references than the pages currently outranking you. For most local businesses that is a small number, earned slowly.
Is buying links against Google’s rules?
Yes, where the link passes ranking signals. Paid placements are permitted if marked appropriately, which removes the ranking benefit. In practice, paying for links is a risk you carry rather than an asset you own.
Do nofollow links have value?
Yes, though less directly. They still send referral traffic, still build awareness, and Google treats the attribute as a hint rather than an instruction. A nofollow link from a national publication is worth having.
Can I build links myself?
Some, yes. Supplier and trade body listings, local sponsorship, and asking people who already mention you to link are all things a business owner can do without specialist help.
