Choosing an agency
SEO agency, freelancer or in house

The right answer depends on your budget, whether you have anyone to execute internally, and how broad the work needs to be.

SEO needs four capabilities: strategy, content, technical work and links or digital PR. Very few individuals cover all four well. How you resource them is the real question behind "agency or freelancer".
The comparison at a glance
| Freelancer | Agency | In house | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | £40 to £75 an hour | £500 to £2,500 a month | £35,000 to £55,000 a year |
| Breadth | Usually one or two strengths | All four capabilities | One person, one skill set |
| Continuity | Risk if they are ill or busy | Team cover | Risk if they leave |
| Seniority you get | High | Varies by account size | Whatever you can hire |
| Speed to start | Fast | Two to four weeks | Two to three months |
When a freelancer is the right answer
A freelancer gives you senior thinking without agency overheads, which is excellent value if your needs are narrow. Local campaigns, content strategy for a small site, or ongoing consultancy for a team that can execute all suit this well. The failure mode is breadth: if the campaign later needs technical development and digital PR at once, one person cannot cover it.

When an agency is the right answer
An agency makes sense when the work is broad, when you need cover and continuity, or when you have nobody internally to execute. It is also the right answer when the job is specialised: site migration SEO Bristol and technical SEO Bristol both benefit from a team that has done it many times before.
The failure mode is dilution. On a small retainer, the senior person who sold the work may not be the person doing it. Ask who works the hours, and see white label SEO for what happens when the answer is nobody at that agency at all.
When in house is the right answer
Hiring makes financial sense once your total external spend approaches a salary, and organisational sense once SEO touches enough of the business that it needs an internal owner. What it does not do is remove the need for specialists. Most mature setups run one in house lead who owns strategy and internal coordination, plus external help for technical work, content volume and digital PR.
A quick way to decide
- Under £700 a month with someone internal to execute: freelancer or consultancy.
- Under £700 a month with nobody internal: a narrow local campaign with an agency, or fix the basics yourself first using the local SEO guide.
- £700 to £3,000 a month: an agency, and read how to choose an SEO agency before you shortlist.
- Above £4,000 a month: consider an in house lead plus specialist agency support.
Whichever route you take, benchmark it against real quotes. You can compare quotes from Bristol SEO agencies and see what the market offers at your budget before committing to a hire.

Frequently asked questions
Are freelancers riskier than agencies?
Differently risky. The freelancer risk is availability and breadth. The agency risk is that your account is small enough to be handed to a junior. Both are manageable if you ask the right questions up front.
Can I use a freelancer and an agency together?
Yes, and it is common. A freelance strategist alongside an agency delivering content and technical work gives you an independent voice checking the work, which many businesses find worth the extra cost.
How much should an in house SEO cost?
Roughly £30,000 to £40,000 for a mid level hire outside London, rising well beyond that for a senior lead. Add tools, training and the cost of them not being able to cover every discipline.
What if I want to do it myself?
Entirely possible for a small local business. The fundamentals are learnable and the highest return work, particularly your Google Business Profile and your core service pages, does not require a specialist.
