Generative engine optimisation: real or rebranded ?

Published 26 August 2026 · Updated 26 August 2026 · 6 min read

Perhaps a fifth of what is sold as generative engine optimisation is new. The rest is the SEO you should already be buying.

Read with AI

Every few years the industry produces a new acronym. This one has more substance than most, because the target genuinely has shifted from clicks to citations. It has also produced a wave of upsells worth examining carefully.

What GEO proposes

  • Write so passages can be extracted and quoted.
  • Make facts explicit and verifiable so a model can repeat them safely.
  • Build entity clarity, so systems know what and who you are.
  • Earn mentions across the web, not only links.
  • Track visibility inside assistants rather than only ranking positions.

What is genuinely new

  1. Citation tracking. Monitoring whether assistants mention you is a new measurement problem with immature tooling. See measuring AI search traffic.
  2. Crawler policy. Deciding which AI crawlers to allow is a genuinely new decision with commercial consequences. See should you block AI crawlers.
  3. Unlinked mentions as a priority. Being talked about now carries weight independent of links. See brand mentions and AI.

What is not new

Clear headings, direct answers, structured data, fast crawlable pages, named authors, real expertise and earned authority are all things competent practitioners have recommended for years. Repackaging them at a premium is a pricing decision, not an innovation. Compare any quote against normal UK SEO pricing.

If an agency quotes for it

Good answers exist. Vague ones, or a refusal to distinguish the new work from the ordinary work, belong with the other SEO agency red flags. Run the whole conversation through questions to ask an SEO agency.

Our own view: if your fundamentals are weak, spend there first. A site with indexing problems and thin service pages will not be rescued by AI specific tactics. An SEO audit in Bristol will tell you which situation you are in, and you can compare Bristol SEO agencies to find one.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Are GEO and AEO different things?

Barely. Answer engine optimisation is the older term, generative engine optimisation the newer one, and both describe optimising to be the cited source. Treat them as the same conversation.

Should I hire a GEO specialist?

Only if your existing SEO is already strong and citation visibility is genuinely your bottleneck. For most businesses that is not the case.

Do the published GEO studies prove anything?

They suggest that clarity, citations and quotable statistics increase the chance of being included. That is worth acting on, and it is not a reason to restructure your entire strategy.

Will this all change again?

Almost certainly. Which is an argument for investing in things that survive changes: genuine expertise, a fast clear site, and a brand people search for by name.
