How to become the source AI cites

Published 26 August 2026 · Updated 26 August 2026 · 7 min read

Assistants quote passages, not pages. Writing in self contained, verifiable passages is most of the work.

Read with AI

Every AI system that cites sources is doing the same thing: retrieving pages, extracting passages, and choosing the ones it can repeat safely. Optimising for that is not a dark art, it is a writing discipline, and it improves the page for human readers at the same time.

Answer first, context second

The most common failure is burying the answer. A page that opens with three paragraphs of preamble offers nothing extractable. Put the direct answer in the opening sentences, then explain, qualify and expand.

This is the same principle behind good on page SEO, and it has been good practice for years. AI retrieval has simply made the cost of ignoring it higher.

Write self contained sections

  • Each H2 section should answer one question completely.
  • Avoid opening sections with "as mentioned above" or pronouns referring to earlier paragraphs.
  • Repeat the subject rather than relying on "it", so a lifted passage still names the thing.
  • Keep paragraphs tight. Long paragraphs mixing three ideas are hard to quote.

Publish things that can be quoted

Generic advice is not quotable because every competing page says it. Specifics are: a price range, a timescale, a checklist, a criterion, a comparison table, a number you measured yourself. This is why our SEO pricing guide publishes ranges rather than saying "it depends".

Make the page safe to repeat

A system deciding whether to quote you is implicitly judging risk. Named authors, stated expertise, dated updates, cited sources and an obvious organisation behind the site all reduce that risk. E-E-A-T, authorship and trust covers what to add and where.

Help machines parse it

  • Proper heading hierarchy, one H1 and descriptive H2s phrased as the question where natural.
  • Tables for comparisons, lists for sequences, so relationships are explicit.
  • Structured data for the entity types that apply. See structured data in an AI world.
  • Clean, crawlable markup. Content rendered only by JavaScript is retrieved less reliably. See technical SEO explained.

None of this replaces ranking. You still have to be in the retrieved set, which means the ordinary work of relevance and authority comes first. If you want an agency to handle it, SEO content writing Bristol lists firms with content teams, or request quotes and ask to see a page they have written recently.

Frequently asked questions

Does adding an FAQ section help?

Yes, when the questions are real ones customers ask and the answers are direct. It does not help when it is a keyword list rewritten as questions, which is obvious to both readers and systems.

Do I need to mention my location for local citation?

State it plainly rather than implying it. A page that says "in Bristol and the surrounding area" is easier to match to a local query than one that assumes the reader already knows.

Is longer content more likely to be cited?

No. Denser content is. A 700 word page answering one question precisely will be quoted more often than a 3,000 word page covering everything vaguely.

How do I know if I have been cited?

Imperfectly. Search your key questions in the major assistants periodically, and watch for referral traffic and branded search growth. Our guide to measuring AI search traffic covers the available methods.
