Google AI Overviews explained

The generated summary at the top of Google results is assembled from pages Google already trusts. Getting into it is a ranking problem before it is anything else.
Read with AI
An AI Overview is a generated summary at the top of the results page, with links to a handful of sources. It is the most visible change to search in a decade and the one most likely to affect your traffic.
Which searches trigger one
- Common: "how does", "what is", "best way to", comparisons, and multi part questions.
- Less common: transactional searches where somebody is clearly buying.
- Rare: local searches with obvious map pack intent, and navigational searches for a specific brand.
- Suppressed: sensitive topics including medical, financial and legal areas, where Google is more cautious.
That distribution is why a local service business feels less impact than a publisher. If most of your valuable searches are "service near me" style, you are largely outside the affected set, as AI and local search explains.
How sources are chosen
Google runs several related searches behind the scenes, retrieves candidate pages, and draws passages from those it considers reliable. In practice, cited pages are usually already visible for the query or something close to it, which makes ordinary ranking the entry requirement.
What gets a passage selected is clarity. Self contained paragraphs that answer one thing completely are quotable. Paragraphs that only make sense after three others are not. How to become the source AI cites covers the writing pattern in detail.
What it does to your traffic
On queries where an Overview appears, expect fewer clicks for the same position. The signature in Search Console is stable impressions with falling clicks and a declining click through rate on question shaped queries, while commercial queries hold steady.
Segment your queries before drawing conclusions. A site that has lost informational clicks but held commercial ones has not got a problem, it has had a low value channel trimmed. SEO KPIs that matter covers reporting this honestly.
The practical response
- Identify which of your pages served informational queries, and judge whether they were producing enquiries at all.
- Rewrite the valuable ones to answer immediately and then go deeper than a summary can: data, examples, process, local specifics.
- Shift emphasis towards commercial and local intent, where clicks survive. See keyword research for business owners.
- Add structured data so your facts are unambiguous. See structured data in an AI world.
- Track branded search, since citation without a click often shows up there later.
If you would like somebody to audit which of your pages are exposed, that sits inside a normal SEO audit in Bristol. You can also compare Bristol SEO agencies and ask how they are handling it for existing clients.

Frequently asked questions
Can I stop my site appearing in AI Overviews?
Not selectively. The nosnippet and max-snippet directives limit what can be shown, but they also limit your ordinary search snippets, which usually costs more than it saves.
Do citations in an Overview send traffic?
Some, though far less than a normal listing. The greater value is being presented as a credible source, which tends to show up as branded searches rather than direct clicks.
Are Overviews always accurate?
No, and that is a reason to publish clear, unambiguous facts. Vague or contradictory content on your own site increases the chance of being summarised wrongly.
Should I stop writing blog content?
Stop writing summaries of common knowledge. Keep writing anything containing your own data, experience, pricing or process, which is exactly the material a generated summary cannot replace.
