AI and local search
Published 26 August 2026 · Updated 26 August 2026 · 6 min read
Somebody who needs a tradesperson today does not want a paragraph of prose. They want a business, a phone number and reviews.
Read with AI
Of all the businesses worrying about AI search, local service businesses have the least to worry about. The reason is structural: a local search has to end with a business, and no summary satisfies it.
The map pack is largely intact
Searches with obvious local intent still return the map pack, ranked on relevance, distance and prominence. Nothing about that has changed, and the local SEO guide still describes the whole job.
When an assistant recommends
Asked "who is a good electrician in Bristol", assistants draw on the same public evidence a person would: reviews, directories, and whatever is visible in search. So the levers are the familiar ones: a complete Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, and consistent details wherever you appear.
The one addition is being described consistently across the web, since that is what a model has to work from. Brand mentions and AI covers how to build that.
Conversational local queries
- They are longer: a problem, a place and a timeframe in one sentence.
- They are better qualified, because the person has already explained their situation.
- They reward pages that name the problem, the area and your response time explicitly.
- They favour businesses with the answers already written down, rather than "call us to discuss".
Practically, that means a page per service and, where you have something real to say, a page per area. You can see the same principle across Bristol areas, for example SEO Clifton and SEO Bedminster.
If you want help, local SEO Bristol lists agencies with the specialism, or request quotes and ask each how AI has changed their local approach. Most honest answers are "very little", which is the right answer.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Will AI replace the map pack?
Unlikely in the near term. The map pack solves a problem summaries cannot: connecting somebody to a specific business with hours, reviews and a route.
Do I need to do anything differently as a local business?
Very little. Publish your prices and process rather than hiding them, keep your details consistent, keep earning reviews. All three were already the advice.
How do assistants pick which businesses to name?
From public signals: prominence in search, review volume and rating, directory presence and consistent descriptions. There is no submission or payment route.
Are voice and assistant queries the same thing?
They overlap. Both are longer and more conversational than typed searches, and both reward pages that answer a specific question in plain language.
