Eight myths about AI and SEO

Published 26 August 2026 · Updated 26 August 2026 · 6 min read

Most of what is said about AI and SEO is either an upsell or a misunderstanding. Here are the eight you will hear most.

Read with AI

Every one of these has been said to a business owner by somebody selling something. Each is followed by what is actually true.

The eight

  1. "SEO is dead." AI answers are assembled from ranking pages, so ranking remains the prerequisite. What has died is content that summarised common knowledge. See AI search and SEO.
  2. "You need a separate AI SEO package." Most of it is ordinary SEO renamed. See generative engine optimisation.
  3. "You can pay to appear in AI answers." No organic placement is for sale. Advertising products are separate and clearly marked.
  4. "AI content gets penalised." Content is judged on quality and intent, not on the tool. See does AI written content rank.
  5. "Block AI crawlers to protect your rankings." Blocking AI crawlers has no effect on rankings and removes you from citations. See should you block AI crawlers.
  6. "Keywords no longer matter." Exact phrasing matters less; knowing what people ask matters as much as ever. See keyword research for business owners.
  7. "We can measure your AI visibility precisely." Nobody can, currently. See measuring AI search traffic.
  8. "Local businesses are about to lose all their traffic." Local intent still resolves to a business. See AI and local search.

Why these persist

Fear sells retainers. An agency that tells you the fundamentals still matter is selling something less exciting than one announcing a paradigm shift, even though the first is doing you more good. This is the same dynamic behind several of the SEO agency red flags.

The reasonable response is to ask for specifics: what would you do differently, and how would we know it worked. Questions to ask an SEO agency covers the rest, and you can request quotes and compare how three firms answer the same question.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is any of the AI panic justified?

Yes, for publishers and anyone whose business model depended on informational traffic. For local service businesses and ecommerce with real products, far less so.

How do I judge an agency’s AI claims?

Ask what they would do differently, how they would measure it, and which of your pages they would change first. Specific answers are credible; framework language is not.

Should I wait and see before investing?

No. The work that helps in AI search is the work that helps in ordinary search, so waiting costs you the compounding without avoiding any risk.

What changes if the landscape shifts again?

Very little, if you have invested in genuine expertise, a fast clear site and a brand people search for by name. Those survive every change.
